AFESC-Cognitive Coaching Foundation SeminarĀ®
Days 1-2 of the Cognitive Coaching Foundation Seminar® are being offered to Mentor Teachers Supporting Aspiring Teachers as a DESE-approved coaching pathway in Arkansas. Participants completing Days 1-2 during the 2023-2024 school year will be eligible to continue the additional 6 days of the Seminar throughout the 2024-2025 school year which leads to certification as a Cognitive Coach. WHAT is COGNITIVE COACHING?: It is not enough to change an isolated behavior. What is important is the thinking that caused the behavior. Cognitive Coaching delves into the fundamental aspects that truly influence teacher learning and development, focusing on teacher cognition. Instead of trying to "correct" individual behaviors, this approach enhances the cognitive processes that produce behavior.. At the core of this training is the belief that each individual possesses internal resources capable of growth and change from within. Cognitive Coaching is a powerful approach to enhancing performance of all school staff members. Coaches support and enhance long-term sustainable growth for teachers and success for their students. Cognitive Coaching Seminars® are an eight-day training in total. In the eight-day seminars, participants learn how to: develop trust and rapport, develop an identity as a mediator of thinking, utilize conversation structures for planning, reflecting and problem resolving, develop teachers' autonomy and sense of community, develop higher levels of efficacy, consciousness, craftsmanship, flexibility and interdependence; apply four support functions: coaching, evaluating, consulting, collaborating; utilize the coaching tools of pausing, paraphrasing, and posing questions; distinguish among the five forms of feedback; and use data to mediate thinking.
