AFESC-Teaching Modern China: A Century of Revolution
China’s modern transformation from enfeebled empire to global economic superpower is among the most significant historical developments of the last century. This workshop provides Grade 5 - 12 teachers with an overview of the major events, themes, and ideas from China’s tumultuous twentieth century as well as a guide to its present political moment. Along the way, we will explore rich classroom resources—from the radical literature and glamorous advertisements of China’s Republican period, to the propaganda posters and poignant memoirs of China’s communist revolution under Mao Zedong, to the policies of (and protests against) China's current authoritarian government. Teachers will leave the workshop with the resources and strategies necessary to explain China’s rapidly changing role in the world today. Benefits Include: 6 hours of PD credit;
$75 stipend;
2 FREE books for teaching modern Chinese history; access to a suite of classroom-ready digital teaching materials; priority registration for future NCTA events
