NAESC - Overexcitabilities and the Gifted Child
It isn’t uncommon for gifted students to express at least one overexcitability. Often enough an
unfortunate outcome is that the behaviors associated with overexcitabilities are viewed as problematic,
and a common response from parents, teachers and administrators of gifted students is to attempt to
eradicate the behaviors, sometimes shaming the child. However, there are strategies to build upon these
natural inclinations (e.g., overexcitabilities) in ways that help students channel tendencies more
productively. In this session, attendees will learn strategies regarding what to do with overexcitabilities;
these strategies include examples of what to say and sample activities suited for each.
