This session will explain the role of phonics in reading. We will learn multi-sensory strategies to teach students decoding and encoding skills that promote orthographic mapping-the process of stroring words permanently. Explicit spelling instructions will be demonstrated with the six syllable types that follow a regular spelling pattern as well as how to teach high frequency words. For more complex spelling patterns, we will learn syllable division rules to set students up for successful reading of multi-syllable words.
