NWAESC(2095)-Foundations of Literacy Instruction for Students with Extensive Support Needs

This session will support educators as they implement phonics instruction aligned with R.I.S.E. and the new Arkansas state standards with students with extensive support needs. We will explore speech sound production, the difference between phonemic awareness/phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, and share strategies for teaching phonics to struggling readers. Throughout the day we will look at the new academic standards for ELA and math, and the new DLM crosswalks that complement them. In addition, we will identify ways to incorporate inclusive practices to support student achievement in multiple settings, using the science of reading and the crosswalk documents as guides. Participants will need to be familiar with the science of reading and the R.I.S.E. initiative to get the most of this session.
