Understanding Poverty:  Strategies to Close the Achievement Gap


- Audience:  K-12 administrators, teachers, counselors, central office administration, and more!


Participants will:

  • learn practical strategies, that if implemented, can close the academic achievement gap of this student subgroup.
  • evaluate and examine critical Engagement Factors that must be addressed to increase academic achievement.
  • evaluate and examine ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences), that if fully addressed, can lead to increased social, emotional and academic success.
  • focus on research-based Instructional strategies to engage and motivate these learners will also be a part of this highly engaged learning experience.

Important Session Information:

This session will focus on gaining a thorough understanding of the critical social, emotional and academic needs that impact students of poverty. Information from leading experts in the field including, Eric Jensen, Carol Dweck, J.D. Vance, Glen Singleton, Ruby Payne and Robert Marzano will be included.

Participants will leave with a plan to address critical issues impacting their students. Schools/Districts are encouraged to bring a team.

The session developer and facilitator, HCESC Consultant Gary Gardella, has had extensive and successful experience working with students of poverty as both a teacher, principal, and consultant.  He is co-author of the book, Understanding Poverty:  Reflections of Practice.
