Social Literacy: Empowering Student Voices

- Audience:  5-12 ELA and Social Studies teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, literacy coaches, gifted teachers and coordinators, curriculum directors, technology coaches, and more!




Participants will:

  • learn new strategies within a real world context to deepen literacy skills and social comprehension.
  • go beyond teaching standards in order to develop students' soft skills such as communicating well; acting upon empathy; being a good critical thinker and problem solver; and being able to make connections across complex ideas.
  • design lessons and units to further social consciousness.
  • earn 6 contact hours (can count toward gifted HQPD contact hours).

Important Session Information:


Participants will be introduced to the power of leveraging student passions in order to elevate literacy skills through the lens of social change and comprehension. We will be exploring text sets, authentic writing experiences, and discussion techniques that encourage students to express themselves and become socially literate citizens.

6 contact hours (can count toward gifted HQPD contact hours).
