OT Approval Number: 161246
Important Session Information:
Historically writing has taken a backseat to reading, however, higher standards have now been set for writing competencies. Writing has long been considered a 'hallmark skill' of an educated individual (Edyburn, 2003). Research shows that 25-33% of students are struggling to achieve competency with this skill (Graham & Santangelo, 2012). Technology developments can provide new options for written expression and may help struggling writers with the process of transcription. This course will explore recent research regarding the components of writing from a developmental perspective. Participants will discuss and explore resources and strategies for assessing students' written output and how it can be used in data collection over time. Participants will be guided through strategies to support struggling writers in an educational setting and when to explore technology to assist with writing. This course will also give practitioners hands on experience with technology features currently available across common platforms (Microsoft, Google, and iOS) equipping and empowering them on the use of technology features with struggling students when appropriate.
