Bill of Rights Institute: Exploring Socratic Pedagogy and Practice

This one-day workshop will invite teachers to examine and practice Socratic dialogue in in-person and virtual classroom settings. Along with fellow educators, the workshop features: examining the norms of Socratic classrooms, fostering classroom culture, evaluating texts, and exploring skills for effective student dialogues. Teachers will explore dialogue-based pedagogy, some pre-college philosophy concepts, the nature of Socratic classrooms, and evaluating texts. Skills include text selection, assessment, evaluating logic, and developing classroom culture. We’ll perform a meta-analysis of the pedagogical approach, trace the academic studies that undergird it, and take away skills for conducting effective dialogue-based practice with students. This workshop is appropriate whether you have never conducted a Socratic dialogue, tried it once, or have had many classes that have had Socratic dialogues. Teachers who complete the entire PD session will receive a stipend of $75.
