Essential Components for Mathematics Intervention
5 practices for successful intervention to help students with disabilities or who struggle with math




Teachers will learn to provide effective math intervention to students with disabilities and those who struggle with math utilizing 5 essential practices: explicit instruction, precise mathematics language, multiple representations, fluency and computation, and word problem solving. Dr. Powell will discuss how to provide these interventions in person as well as virtually. Sessions include effective word problem solving, using manipulatives to support mathematics learning, Multi-tier support for students with mathematics difficulty, Importance of symbol and vocabulary instruction, and mathematics peer assisted learning strategies.

Dr. Sarah Powell is an associate professor of Special Education at UT Austin and has conducted professional development for educators and parents in over 25 states and internationally.   She has authored several significant pieces of research and won the 2018 Early Career Research Award by the Council for Exceptional Children Division for Research.
