Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP)

Teresa Parrill will provide an overview of LAMP, an communication approach based on neurological and motor learning principles. The goal is to give individuals who are nonverbal or have limited verbal abilities a method of independently and spontaneously expressing themselves in any setting.  The first day will provide an outline of LAMP with examples and strategies.  Day two is designed to further the communication partner's ability to implement the outlined LAMP strategies at different language stages and across environments.

Discussion will include:  assessing current language level, setting goals for developmental progression and analyzing data logging.

The presenter will cover a variety of strategies and supports for language development such as:  expanding vocabulary in natural environments, modeling, teaching the motor plan and how to use aided language input.  Videotaped sessions will be used for group discussions.
