This session is offered in collaboration with the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) Speaker Series - From Research to Implementation.
One of the greatest obstacles teachers face is when students become overly dependent on their guidance. When students can write with greater independence, it will ultimately develop their stamina, volume, and, eventually, quality of work. How do we strategically plan for each students’ growth and independence? On this day, teachers will study strategic scaffolding and learn ways to deliberately plan for repeated practice and release of control over time. Whether working with our most fragile learners or those who just need a gentle nudge, this will give writers the wings they need to do their greatest work (eventually without you!)
Through the use of her document camera, copy paper, post its and markers, watch her create one anchor chart after another right before your eyes. Strategies, tools, organizers, text evidence charts - the list goes on and on! The best part is each and every chart from the workshop can be created with your own students beginning the very next day. All virtual participants receive full color copies of every chart from the workshop as a take-home “goodie bag”. Additionally, Meredith uses Breakout Rooms and various interactive tools to allow participants to work in groups throughout the day to create projects and teaching materials in a joyous collaborative way. Meredith includes lots of engaging games, drawing lessons, Q and A “Quiz Shows” and share fairs to keep participants smiling across the whole day. This will be a virtual workshop you will never forget!
