School administrators and classroom teachers face many challenges in ensuring school entry to all students eligible to attend, creating effective programs for immigrant students and English Learners (ELs), as well as understanding what education and services are required to be provided to them and their parents.
This session will discuss what public schools can and cannot require of immigrant children and ELs. Topics include Social Security numbers, immigration documents, birth certificates, immunization records, and access to school lunch and breakfast programs. The session will also cover the rights of English Learners and their parents, including providing examples of some common issues encountered by schools. Additional topics will include Special Education and English Learners; Supplement not Supplant Requirements; and Access to Post-Secondary Education for immigrant students. Both federal and Texas law will be discussed.
