Promoting Early Literacy Skills in Early Education Settings

Preschoolers' engagement with text is a key way in which young children's literacy skills cam be enhanced; these skills include code-based skills (precursors to skilled decoding) and meaning-based skills (precursors to skilled comprehension). In this session we will learn strategies for implementing instruction in important code- and meaning-based skills that children are developing during the prekindergarten years, and examine how daily read-alouds can be used as a means to improve these skills. Participants will practice designing instruction and leave with materials that will support implementation during their next read-aloud.
