From Scribbles to Words: Supporting Preschoolers with Disabilities Development of Emergent Literacy Skills

In the early childhood classroom, writing development starts with the first marks a child makes to represent their ideas. The development of writing begins with oral language and fine motor development and moves to the use of creative spelling and recognizable words. In this session, we will look at writing from the beginning of developing the oral story and fine motor skills to the type of writing skills required by the Prekindergarten Guidelines. We will discuss the use of scaffolded instruction for preschoolers with disabilities to be successful. Participants will leave with a variety of strategies for supporting their young writers. Session and materials costs are partially funded through state or federal grants.
