Something to Talk About: Bridging the Gap Between Play and Communication in an Early Childhood Special Education Setting

Learn how Early Childhood Special Education Teachers and Speech Language Pathologists can work collaboratively to create a balance of language (vocabulary, pragmatics, etc.), literacy, and play during therapy and classroom activities. Join Blair Miller, as she creates and organizes thematic units for lesson planning. Themes will center on student needs while integrating both social play and book sharing strategies to foster early literacy skills. Participants will explore ideas for engaging students in reciprocal play, incorporating choice boards for making requests, scaffolding feedback, methods for targeting young children with a wide range of cognitive and social skills, goal writing, and embed IEPs into activities.
