Switches and simple voice output devices make it possible for students with physical and complex communication challenges to actively participate during instructions, lessons, and daily activities. When an appropriate switch or voice output device is selected for a student, opportunities to take an active part during instructional lessons and communication interactions increase. This session will introduce a variety of switches and simple voice output devices, provide ideas for students to engage and actively participate in activities, and promote independence throughout the school day.
Session Objectives:
1. Explain why active engagement is critical for student success
2. List three specific times of day that you could integrate assistive technology to increase student communication opportunities
3. Discuss how to ensure lesson planning takes into account integrating technology per activity and per student
