Workshop Title
"Disability in the Context of Diversity"
Session Description
Disability is often casted apart from diversity and framed as an individual phenomenon. However, just as there is diversity in the form of race, gender, culture, such is also true of disability. However, disability is more than just another dimension of diversity, it is inseparable. Through a telling of stories and histories, this workshop provides opportunities for critical self- and systems-level reflection.
Objectives
1. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will identify varying perspectives
(models) of disability and possible advantages and disadvantages of each.
2. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to define and provide
examples of “microaggression” and consider its impact on self- and systems’ level practices.
3. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will determine the ways in which
disabilities have been historically addressed educationally and politically.
