Learn key elements necessary for setting up and maintaining a life skills-type classroom for elementary - secondary students with significant cognitive disabilities. Part I is designed for teachers new to working in these programs (0-3 years of experience) or for teachers needing a refresher. Content includes classroom organization, schedules, writing standards-based IEPS, instructional strategies, reading, and more. The format for each of the 4 days of training varies. Days one and three of the series will be held onsite at Region 4 where materials for the entire series will be provided. These days will not be recorded or available via zoom. Day 2 will be a self-paced course provided through the Texas Complex Access Network (CAN) via Canvas. Day 4 will be held virtually/live via the zoom platform and the recording will be made available afterwards for 2 weeks. Both onsite and live/virtual sessions will be from 9 am – 3 pm. It is strongly suggested to secure coverage for classroom responsibilities in order to effectively engage with the virtual/live and Zoom-based sessions. Session and materials costs are partially funded through state or federal grants.
The Life Skills Institute: Part II will commence after
Part I concludes and requires separate registration. It is recommended to
complete the two-part series but not required.
