Active and meaningful parent participation increases student success. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates that schools must take steps to ensure parents are present at IEP team meetings or are afforded to the opportunity to participate. This course will provide information, guidance, and best practices for increasing meaningful parent participation in the IEP process. Considering parents' suggestions and incorporating these into the IEP when possible will increase parent support and help to ease parental concerns.
As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify federal and state regulations for parent participation in the IEP process.
2. Identify strategies for increasing parent participation in the IEP process.
3. Identify strategies for engaging culturally and linguistically diverse parents in the IEP process.
4. Identify strategies for successfully navigating disagreements during the IEP process.
