Students with disabilities have lower academic outcomes,
decreased interaction with peers who do not have disabilities, and decreased
postsecondary outcomes compared with peers who do not have disabilities. Identifying
racial or cultural differences as disability conditions has negative
repercussions for both the student and the local education agency. This course
explores the current trends of significant disproportionality in disability
identification that are occurring in Texas. A road map for special educators to combat significant disproportionality will be outlined. With
comprehensive, district-wide efforts, significant disproportionality can be reversed
with evidence-based practices in evaluating culturally and linguistically
diverse students.
As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-
Define the terms “significant disproportionality” and “risk ratio”.
-
Identify current trends in significant disproportionality.
-
Summarize the most common causes of disproportionality.
-
Apply their learning to the creation of a plan to combat disproportionality.
