Effective decision-making in the special education referral process requires a data-driven approach. This session will explore key data sources that school teams can use to guide referrals, ensuring that students receive appropriate support and services. Participants will learn how to interpret and utilize student intervention data from multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) to make informed decisions. Additionally, the session will highlight the role of curriculum-based measures (CBMs) in assessing student progress and determining the need for further evaluation. By integrating these data sources, educators can strengthen the referral process, differentiate between instructional gaps and disabilities, and enhance student outcomes. Through case studies and practical examples, attendees will gain strategies for effectively applying data in their decision-making processes.
As a result of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Identify potential data sources that could assist school teams in making informed decisions regarding referrals for special education.
2. Interpret and utilize student intervention data from multi-tiered systems of support.
3. Describe curriculum-based measures and their importance in the special education referral and evaluation process.
