Write That Down! Supporting Writing for Students with Complex Communication Needs





In this session, Dr. Carolyn Musselwhite will share tried and true strategies for engaging and growing your emergent writers including how to support topic setting and writing for multiple purposes in multiple environments. With the right alternative pencil, the right activities, and the right feedback it is possible for students with complex communication needs and cortical vision impairments to become generative writers. Session and materials costs are partially funded through state and/or federal grants.



Important Session Information:



Dr. Caroline Musselwhite will share tried and true strategies for engaging and growing your emergent writers, including how to support topic selection and writing for multiple purposes. Both light-tech and high-tech tools will be demonstrated. With the right alternative pencil, the right activities, and the right feedback, it is possible for students with complex communication needs and cortical visual impairments to become generative writers. This session will provide participants with what they need to get started with writing with their students! Participants will participate in two Maker events and multiple try-it activities. They will also have access to a Dropbox of additional materials including plans for more Maker writing activities. Session and materials costs are partially funded through state and/or federal grants.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will describe at least 4 alternative pencils and match them to student needs.
  • Participants will summarize at least 3 activities for generative writing throughout the day for emergent learners, including students with complex communication needs and/or CVI.
  • Participants will recommend and demonstrate 3 strategies for providing feedback regarding writing to emergent learners.

Caroline Musselwhite is the owner of AAC Intervention and receives compensation as such. During her presentation, she will be referencing her company and actual case studies. She has authored many books and software items and receives royalties and or consulting fees for these publications through her company, Building Wings, and the Attainment Company. She has consulted with other companies, including AbleNet, Assistiveware, and Panther Technologies, but has not received money from these companies for the past 5 years. She has consulted with nonprofit groups such as FAST and Angelman Syndrome Association. She also sells digital books through TeachersPay Teachers, and will receive a speaking fee for today's session.
