Learning Objectives:
Day 1
1. Participants will be able to define Augmentative and Alternative communication in their own words and explain three key situations where AAC would be beneficial.
2. Participants will identify laws mandating evaluation and provision of AAC services in schools.
3. Participants will be able to describe two AAC assessment tools, and explain the purpose of each tool.
4. Participants will list three practical tips for incorporating AAC into their current classroom or therapy setting.
Day 2
1. Participants will identify three core communication skills (e.g. requesting, commenting, expressing emotions, etc.) and explain how AAC can support each skill development in individuals with complex communication needs.
2. Participants will be able to develop a two step plan for introducing new vocabulary to a student.
3. Participants will be able to describe two strategies for incorporating AAC use into specific classroom activities, and explain how each strategy promotes student participation.
4. Participants will identify two ways to use AAC to support the development of early literacy skills and explain the rationale behind each approach.
