New school counselors often question how to become effective, make an impact and balance the many responsibilities of successful counselors. Those new to the role want to quickly step into their positions and experience success with their students. Learning from those currently working in the field and building a counseling "toolkit" to guide the first days and weeks on the job will be invaluable to new counselors. Every new school counselor should feel confident, understanding their role and best practices regarding implementation of the Guidance and Counseling program.
The New School Counselor Academy (NSCA) is a multi-session professional development designed for those entering campus-level school counseling positions with two years or less of school counseling experience. Participants will receive best practices, timely information and valuable resources that will assist them in developing, managing, and implementing guidance and counseling programs on their campus. Academic, career, and personal/social counseling components will be addressed, in addition to allotted time for networking. Other topics include, but not limited to:
- Administrator and Counselor Relationships
- School Counselor's Role in Behavior Strategies and Interventions
- 4 Components of Guidance Program: Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning,
- Responsive Services, and System Support
- Career Clusters, Programs of Study, and Personal Graduation Plans
