Being An American: Exploring The Ideals that Unite Us

The Hatton W. Sumners Foundation, Law Focused Education Inc./State Bar of Texas invite you to attend Being An American: Exploring the Ideals that Unites Us institute during the summer of 2017. This twelve-hour institute is for secondary teachers who would like to explore material which focuses on the significance of America’s founding documents and civic values, as well as the contributions of great Americans who were committed to these principles and exemplified these values. Being An American: What Unites Us Institute will focus on five areas of study: One—The United States Constitution The objective of this section is to help students understand the significance of the United States Constitution by recognizing its purpose and its structure. Two—The United States Bill of Rights The objective of this section is for students to understand the importance of the rights of the individual and limits on government, as articulated in the United States Bill of Rights. Three—America’s Civic Values The objective of this section is for students to discover and embrace the civic values that underlie our American way of life. Four—American Heroes: Past and Present The objective of this section is for students to learn about great Americans, in order for them to serve as role models that inspire students to take seriously the responsibilities of citizenship. Five—American Citizenship: A Personal Response The objective of this section is to challenge students to reflect on the meaning of American citizenship and to articulate their personal response to this challenge – both in their current lives as students and in their future lives as adults.
