High Plains Drifter: Palo Duro Canyon

Teachers will explore a local resource, Palo Duro Canyon, through nature walks and featured activities. This state treasure is second only to the Grand Canyon in splendor and geologic time. In this workshop, participants will explore local flora and fauna to recreate life on the plains. Palo Duro Canyon is a unique geologic land feature that was craved out over eons by the wind and water. It is often a significant landmark used in our STAAR exams. Participants will connect with past civilizations that used the canyon as their home. Experiences with the traditional hunting tool, the atlatl, will highlight the afternoon. In addition to Indian and cowboy culture, participants will gain an insight on how the CCC helped build this state part. This workshop is a part of the High Plains Difter series. Participants will meet at the nature center’s entrance at 9 am to enter canyon. Please bring lunch, snacks, and water for your personal use.
